【2015】 Weekly Journal

【Week 11】11.30-04.12

On Monday we learned some concepts and had some instruction about the 3D-model. For example , the composition, material, lighting and rendering, etc. This course is very interesting and I would like to learn more and gain a greater skill in creating 3D-models.

On Wednesday I had a Photoshop course and learned how to make different brushes and use different texture in PS. In this image I use different combinations of brush mode to achieve a different result.

I like to make my own brushes because it's a good skill for creating artwork and making it easier to get the desired effect. Then I tried to use these brushes to do a drawing. The rough brush is suitable for drafting and the fine brush for doing the detail. Some brushes I have yet to use but I think they will be still useful for other work e.g. metal texture and ruderal texture.

After I finished my brushes I tried to use them to draw a picture in Photoshop. It took me about 2 hours to draw this and I had to think about every brush's merit with it's construction.

I looked at some modern Chinese paintings when I finished my class. Compared with the realistic style of canvas, the Chinese classical painting style is more inclined to reflect the artistic conception. Artists use water-soluble pigments with a soft brush to draw and soften the colours in their paintings. I think this style makes the paintings more abstract but with simple elegance. Some artists like to use Chinese ancient poetry linked together with their paintings. I think I could adopt some of these ideas and try to use them in my artwork.

On Thursday I leaned how to use Maya. This is my first time using 3D software.  I think it's quite fun, but difficult at times. I would like to find an online course so I can learn more about it.

On Friday I found some images to help me  practice different lamps. I drew these lamps and it took me about 4 hours for each. I tried to made each single part, then find a way to combine it. After I finished I felt that I had got to grips with this technique a little better than yesterday.

By Saturday I now draw the lamps a little more quickly and with better detail. I'm very happy today. I tried to use different Polygons to create a basic model. Then added edge to create more useful faces and move the vertex to make the model more elaborate. For example, maybe a lamp containing more than 8 polygons. I drew these 3 lamps in 6 hours. I needed to make sure they combine together well and they followed  the theme of the reference diagram.

【Week 12】12.07-12.11

Monday, we learned about UV mapping. It is the basic unit of colour for the model. We can cover the model by a variety of UV mapping's forms, they then could be assigned materials. Although it could not change the structure of the model, it can achieve the results I want by changing the density and the material.

On Tuesday I used whole day to looking at some traditional Chinese Gongbi paintings. The impact of skill and technique is an important point of aesthetics spiritual in Chinese traditional painting.
It mainly embodies these facts . For Instance ,the exquisite and common custom of Gongbi painting is achieved by meticulous and realistic style. Traditional Chinese painting also has many styles, among them Gongbi can date back to the Qin and Han Dynasty with a history of more than 2000 years. Overall, Gongbi is characterized by fine brushwork and attention to detail and bright colours.
I watched some drawing videos on Youtube, I think the artists are very diligent when they try to make every brush stroke perfect. Because they can't deviate from the set stages of the painting. I would like to learn some of their skill and make my work a more personal style.

On Wednesday we have a life drawing course. In the first and second image, we drew each head in 3mins. And the last image we drew it in 40mins. I'm not very enjoy this lesson today. Because the model moved his face quite often, so I couldn't check if there are some mistakes on my pieces.

On Thursday we leant how to make UV in Maya. I'm not sure how to do it but I will find some online courese to try to understand it. After I finished my class I go to youtube to looking at online courese until I go to sleep.

On Friday I made a barrel for practice UV, I think it's quite interesting when I finished it. I used 8hrs to making it because I had done so many mistake of it, even now I think it is not very perfect. But I think it is looking good, so I would like to try more UV stuff in future.

On Saturday I use 6hr to make a box with different textures. I think it is a good practice for me to think of different textures on the modle. e.g. different shapes of the box with different textures.

On Sunday I use 11hrs to made a calabash and a short katana. BecauseI don't know how to chaged the shape angles for it so I restarted 6times for made my katana. They are from my comics logo, and the user is called Miyuki Imai. I would like to make these for helping me to draw my comics.

【Week 12】12.14-12.18

On Tuesday and Wednesday I used 2 whole days ( less eating time and sleep time) for making a German halberd for my own work. According to the peculiarity I changed the German halberd to looks like a knight's sword, called it Cleopatra. When I making this halberd I made many mistakes of UV, but I think I can do it better now. Because I just restarted 12times for making it and I do many modification for make sure the angle is good and the UV look right.
